Everyday Waffles

Mar10

Our family loves waffles, and the kids want me to buy them all the time. Yet, with the increase in waffle prices, this is something that’s been crossed off my shopping list. The price point is just too high.

This homemade waffle recipe is perfect for our family. It’s very similar to my “Oh Boy” Easy Homemade waffle recipe, with just slight adjustments. Yes, I make multiple waffle recipes just to keep it interesting, but I am soon about to land on just one and memorize it to pass down to our daughters.

Homemade Waffle Recipe

  • 1 3/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour or 2 cups cake flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 beaten egg yolks
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup oil or melted shortening (yes, old recipe)
  • 2 stiff – beaten egg whites

Variations for Waffle Recipe

  • Buttermilk Waffles: Substitute buttermilk for sweet milk. Add 1/2 tsp soda and cut baking powder to 2 tsp.
  • Ham Waffles: Sprinkle 2 TB finely chopped cut ham over batter before closing maker.
  • Pecan  or Chocolate Chip Waffles: Sprinkle a few broken pecans or chips before closing waffle maker. (Yes, maker will get chocolaty.)

(This is a peek into our waffle making mornings. Since I don’t have a heavy duty Belgium waffle maker, I picked up waffle makers at yard sales and thrift stores. I now have three going at all times, and even that doesn’t whip them out fast enough. I try and make extras to freeze, but that’s a challenge. Tripling this for one sitting is the norm. I will literally need to do a freezer bulk baking day, JUST for extra waffles. :))

  1. I also have a family that loves waffles. Target still has waffles fairly cheap by us so for now that’s what we eat. Although I love homemade waffles more than store bought my kids on the other hand, don’t. So I make them for myself and freeze them sometimes. I love your waffle making picture, way to keep it real! 🙂

Ange – I think my kids love the frozen ones too. Maybe our next attempt should be to mimic a recipe of store bought..now that would be funny.

  2. I have a waffle loving family too. We will have to try this recipe. Right now we have ONE waffle maker for our family of 10. We are looking at the double, flip-over one at Sam’s club… still thinking.

Tabitha – I know. I have seen those as well and am so tempted. I keep going back and forth because as nice as they are, they still don’t produce multiple wafffles. I think you and I need to put our heads together and create a “large family” waffle iron. Seriously, I think we could become rich…;)

Actually, this one does two at once which is why we are soooo tempted!

  4. Using more than one waffle iron at a time is a revolutionary thought! I might be able to keep up with my waffle snarfing family if I use more than one maker. Thanks for the great tip!

  5. Oh boy, do I feel your pain!! We have 3 boys (2 teens and 1 younger) and extra food around here is a novelty!! I keep trying to make extras of things to put in the freezer and it all seems to disappear before it cools. I know it won’t always be this way so I just try to enjoy the fact that they are all home for now and like to eat what I make. : )

  6. We enjoy waffles too – and I always make extra for ‘toaster waffles’ – our kids only get the boxed waffles at Grammy’s house! They have so many chemicals in them – I refuse to buy them! Grammy is nicer than me!
I have two small waffle makers on the go, and there are only 4 of us so I can just imagine the production of making waffles for a large ‘child blessed’ family! I will try your recipe soon – mine has melted butter, some vanilla and an extra egg, but is otherwise similar to yours. I love the vanilla scent as they cook! We reserve the toaster waffles for the mornings when we have to rush out the door early, so that makes them last longer since we usually only do that Sunday.

  7. I double and freeze my waffles 12, to a gallon size bag. And I just made 20 extra pancakes last night for us and some to give away. Yes, my kitchen looks like that too:) Nice pics. I bought a quad waffle maker from target one year for about $12 and it’s been a lifesaver to freezer cook waffles. http://cookandplay.wordpress.com/2011/01/20/banana-nut-whole-wheat-waffles/

  8. I’m so sad. Dh made me get rid of my wafflemaker 6 years ago when we moved back to NY state. I regret that decision every day since my boys love waffles. Time to invest in one (or else a thrifted one).

  9. I have a waffle loving family too. As a matter of fact, my 16 year old son asked for a waffle maker for his birthday last year just so he could have them again. (My old waffle iron had seen many better days!)

Thanks for the reminder. I think I will make waffles this weekend. Now that three of our five children are out of the house, it doesn’t take quite as much energy as it once did! Enjoy every minute of it!!!

An add-in I like to my waffle recipe is grated orange zest. Yum.

I think we just may incorporate the buttermilk waffle recipe into our Sunday morning meal plan. I just asked my husband how much he like waffles, as in, enough to make our own, and he said, as a matter of fact, when he has to be traveling for work, which isn’t often, I am so thankful for, the first thing he goes for is waffles. Just when you think y0u know everything about your husband!

  12. I made my first waffles with my new (heart-shaped) waffle maker for my husband this morning. They looked (and tasted) really good!

  13. I snagged a Freecycle waffle iron from a friend. I tried making Bisquik waffles and waffles from scratch, but my scratch wasn’t so amazing LOL.

I’m totally trying these this weekend. THANKS!
