How’s that for a few encouraging words this Sunday, Day 2?
Throughout history, the plethora of true life events tied to the desire for money rival any bestselling book or soap opera.
So many strong emotions and feelings are tied to the topic of money. Yet, as we begin our series focusing on this topic, one needs to realize that money is a-moral.
Read that again. Money is amoral. Money, in and of itself, is neither good nor bad. Cold, hard cash is not moral, nor is it evil.
Whether you believe the Bible to be the Word of God or just a historical book, the scripture that declares, “The love of money is the root of all evil,” packs a punch of truth and wisdom that I adhere to as we approach our future discussions. It’s the heart attitude behind money that creates or solves problems.
For years, I have been content with little money, but I also know that increasing our income allows our family to be more generous, prepare for the future, stay debt free and help those in need.
It’s a matter of balance, and I try to have a regular attitude check in terms of perspective on “wants vs. needs.”
But that topic, is saved for another day. 🙂
Have you ever thought of money as being amoral? Kind of an interesting perspective, isn’t it?
It is. It’s hard to think of it that way. I usually consider it a “necessary evil,” at best. 🙂 But no, money can be used to bless or torment — and when people have a lot of it, you can see what they are truly made of. Money is simply a tool, and can be used to further God’s kingdom work or to further (and fuel) our own selfish wants and desires. Great way to start the month — with this perspective.

I guess I look at money like an arbitrary tool – necessary to make, use and get good and services. But yes – history tells an oft-wicked story of the pursuit of money and power. 🙂

I really appreciated reading this. Sometimes when we hear of terrible things being traced back to the pursuit of money, the message gets garbled up and sounds more like “Money is the root of all evil” rather than “love of money is the root of all evil” as you point out. And I think it’s a good point to make. The money itself isn’t what is good or evil; It’s how we pursue it and what we do with it.

Ah, yes. It truly is. So often misquoted too as people say money is the root of all evil. Nope! It’s the LOVE of money that gets to people.
Money is just that. A tool. And to much is given, much is required.

i love this, because i tend to think of it as my own personal enemy that’s fighting against me every day. and that gives it power over me that it should not have. and influences my attitude and spirit in a way that i don’t want it to.

Absolutely, it’s about the attitude, not the thing itself. Money is simply a vehicle. I don’t believe God wants us living in lack and limitation. I believe He wants to bless us, to see us prosper, so that we may bless others in His name.
