When I Say “I Do” (Jen Sharing)

Sep1

Last month, my niece and a wonderful young man stood before the Lord and declared, “I do.”

I’ve had  the privilege of singing at many weddings over the years, but when it’s someone who is like a daughter to me, those moments of music hit a bit closer to home. By the end of the song, I could barely squeak out the words through my tears.

Only recently had I first heard the song, “When I say I do,” by Matthew West. In an age where the commitment to marriage through difficult times has become optional, the very simple message of this song resonated dearly to me. I introduced it to my niece as an option, and she loved it!

As I shared in my last post, I’ve been convicted to “Love Them Well,” and I hope as you listen to this song, it’s a reminder that every day will be the proof of that love manifested in the little intentional choices of our day to day.

It’s so much easier to say than to do, and I’m the first to admit that I am in process.

Take a few minutes and follow along with the words of this song (which begins right before the first chorus.)

(If reading by email, click over to the blog to view the video of When I say I do.)

There must be a God, I believe it’s true.
Cause I can see His love, when I look at you.
And he must have a plan for this crazy life.
Because He brought you here and placed you by my side.

Chorus:
And I have never been so sure of anything before,
Like I am in this moment here with you
Now for better or for worse are so much more than only Words
And I pray everyday will be the proof
That I mean what I say when I say ‘I do’
Yeah I mean what I Say when I say ‘I do’

You see these hands you hold, will always hold you up
When the strength you have just aint strong enough
And what tomorrow brings, only time will tell
But I will stand by you in sickness and in health

(Chorus)
Take my hand and take this ring
And know that I will always love you through anything.

And as the years march on like a beating heart
I will live these words ’til death do us part’ (repeat chorus)

Hey, I am singing that in a wedding next month. Where did you get the music in that key?

    [Reply]

  17. Jill Shepherd Anderson I actually didn’t have any music, I transposed it to my key and “chorded” it, but I know that if you google it with piano music, you can purchase it in varying keys for around $6. 🙂

  25. Jen – That song was perfect! I had never heard it before. I will be singing for my sister’s wedding in April and need to find a song – and I think I just did! Which key is it in? I have an alto voice and think I could manage singing it in the key you sang.
