Best Kitchen Tips: Easily Remove Onion and Garlic Smell from Hands

Nov25

One of my favorite smells is that of onions, garlic and butter sizzling away in the pan, but the stench the onions and garlic leaves on my hands from all the peeling and dicing is another matter.

It’s that time of year when we all are going to be facing the same issue and while specialty kitchen shops everywhere want to sell you their Magic Soap Odor Remover, I’m going to dazzle you with my own magic and it won’t cost you a cent.

(Although I’d love if you share this free tip with your friends.)

Are you ready for it? It really works!! And I’m still surprised at its ease.

To remove onion, garlic, fish, bleach, or really any kind of odors from your hands, rub your hands with a stainless steel utensil right under the cold water from the tap.

Typically, I just hold a stainless steel knife under the cold water and then I run my hands under the water that flows from it.  The stainless steel neutralizes the smell. The onion smell comes out right away, but garlic may take a bit longer.

There is science behind it, but don’t ask me to explain how it works. I just know it does since I’ve been doing this for years. Someone shared this kitchen tip with me when I first got married and it’s still one of my favorite tips to share. I can’t believe I haven’t told you all before (but maybe you already knew it.)

If you click on this Magic Soap Odor Remover, you can read about all that it does, but you’ll see it’s a cool stainless steel “bar,” and now you know why its magic.

Happy chopping.

Hi Jen, I have been doing this for years too, but I have a stainless steel double sink. I run my
wet hands along the top of the part that divides the sink. Just did this last night when I was cooking something for Thanksgiving. Glad you shared this. . I tell all my friends.

Now a stainless steel sink would be the best “magic odor remover” ever. 🙂 Love that!!

  2. So interesting! I have a spray bottle that I use that has white vinegar and water in it and I usually spray that on my hands and use regular soap to get rid of the smell (works every time) but I may have to give this a try too!

  3. Here this is how I get onion and garlic off my hands and it works every time. Run your hands under cold water, then sprinkle hands with salt, then a little dish soap on them any brand and rub vigorously together for a few seconds then rinse under cold water and voila no more smell.

  4. You can also rub salt on your hand, then wash with soap.

Another is to put your hands under cold water, sprinkle salt on both hands, squirt a bit of dish soap on hands rub together then rinse hands in cold water.
