Easy Beach Crafts – Plaster of Paris Sand Prints

Mar14

Since it’s that time when many hit the beach, I thought I would share this post from a few years ago. Not only do I still have my box of Plaster of Paris ready for another set of prints, but we have the precious foot prints still gracing a book shelf from years ago. This is one of our favorite beach activities, and the kids get so creative. I would so appreciate if you share this on pinterest. It’s another wonderfully easy and frugal fun craft.

As family vacations and reunions begin in full force, may people head to the beach, lake or any place to stay cool by the water, and this is the ultimate in DIY beach arts and crafts.

Not only are these beach crafts fun and frugal for the whole family, but once you arrive back home you have some perfect garden stones or summer decor for the porch or family room (if you can get it away from your sweet child.)

Days at the beach are typically filled with the same sand, sun, fun, and water, water, water, so why not create a memorable masterpiece that children of all ages will have a blast creating?

They are such a wonderful and unique memento, but the neat thing about this craft is that if you are far from a beach, any ‘ole sand will do ya.

Find your back yard sand box and have this same fun.

All you need is some good ole Plaster of Paris found here (or in craft store), sand and water.

Hand prints made from plaster of paris. So cute!

Yesterday, we had such fun making easy, yet frugally fantastic Plaster of Paris sand prints right at the beach. We got creative with our footprints, hand prints and then the hearts.

There are no rules when it comes to creating these masterpieces. We can’t wait to try all different designs, but I will share how we did the feet imprints.

1. Have your child press his/her hand or feet into damp sand, making a 2-inch-deep impression. If you’re doing a hand imprint, make sure it’s deep enough or a finger will break off (trust me on this). 🙂

2. If desired, line the foot or hand print with treasures pretty side down (shells, rocks, pretty rock glass). Make sure you don’t push them too hard into the sand.

3. Mix the plaster of Paris per the box’ direction. It should have a thick, creamy consistency.

4. Carefully pour the plaster into the inlay of the print, making sure you get the plaster into the fingers. (We used our fingers. But if you want to preserve any kind of manicure, plastic knives work very well.)

5. Let the plaster set until it’s hard – approximately one hour. To remove the print, carefully dig out the sand from around/underneath the plaster. Wrap your project in a towel to transport it, and be very careful. The hands are especially fragile.

There are so many variations with this craft, and a definite bonus is that purchasing a large box of Plaster of Paris at your local Walmart is only a few dollars, and it goes a long way! You can paint it after you’re finished to match your decor or you can preserve it as is.

Don’t allow yourself to think this is one of those projects reserved only for “crafty” people. Trust me, it is so worth your time (even if you’re not at the beach, a sandbox or doing it in a casserole dish works great as well. :))

What a wonderful way to capture a special moment in time.

  1. What a fun idea! I’ll have to remember to get that next time we’re at Walmart.

  2. Wow, fun AND they look cool! But how does the sand not stick to the plaster of paris? Oh, and where do we make them if we have no beach? (you know, in the middle of Kansas)

If you look carefully, there is still a little sand on it, but it adds to the affect. 🙂 If you want to do this with no beach. You just use a 9×13 dish, fill it with sand, and you can do the same craft. Fun, fun…

  6. What a delightful fun project.
And you don’t necessarily need the beach, a sandbox would be great for this, also.

    Jen Reply:

Yes, we made the heart. Once we had the process down, we stared experimenting.

  12. We’re going to try this along the shores of Lake Michigan this summer!
How many pairs of kids’ feet will the Walmart box do?
Do bigger kid feet become a problem because of their size?

    [Reply]

    Jen Reply:

The box from Walmart will probably do 50 feet. There is a LOT of mix. And no, we did the adults as well, you just need to be careful with the toes. Handle them carefully, since the have a tendency to break if you make the toes (or finger) areas too skinny.

I am looking for fun projects with which to entertain an 8 and 10 year girl who love doing creative things. They will love this and have fun collecting sea glass and mussel shells from the beach. Thanks!

I love your idea here. Reminds me of the sand candles of the 70’s. What a great way to create and commemorate a fun family day at the ocean. Clever.

  19. oooo very cool and perfect for our trip in a few weeks!

I’ve never done anything with plaster of paris (not since i was a kid, anyways) – if you were to write the name in the sand (after you did the imprint, and before you poured the plaster in) would it ‘transfer’ to the final project? I’m thinking name and year would be a cool addition, if that would work… ?

  20. If you sink a paper clip into the back and have the loop hanging out it will work as a hanger to hang the little feet prints along the walls. I am wishing my kids were younger now. We have done foot prints with stamping ink and make square Christmas ornaments out of them on tag board, but now I want them little again to do this project. Guess the teenagers will just have to put up with Mom and her craft projects. The good part is, their friend’s Mom’s don’t do this kind of stuff, so I look like the crafty mom when all the other teenagers go home with craft projects they made at my house. Thank you for all the great ideas! Loving your site!

  23. I want to tell you how much fun this activity was and how well it turned out. It took some planning on my part because where we go on vacation to the beach we walk about 5 minutes from the house to the shore so I had to tote water in an empty 2 liter bottle and bring other necessary utensils. The wind was blowing pretty good so I got a nice covering on my knee and hand with the plaster powder. LOL My kids are 11 and 13 but they still enjoyed it and being the mama I think their not-so-small piggy toes are still cute! 🙂 Thanks for sharing the idea!
