Frugal Fashionista in NYC

Feb16

Heading to NYC Frugal Fashionista

I’m writing this live from the Big Apple. Fashion Week is here and that means I’m getting ready to go behind the scenes of Christian Sciriano’s Fall 2015 Show compliments of Payless Shoes. They’ve been so much fun to work with and I’m just thrilled to have this opportunity.

Fashion Week for Payless Shoes

When I received my itinerary, I found out that I would only be booked part of Saturday for the actual show, so I was the most spontaneous mom ever and surprised our teen daughter with this trip.

Surprise trip to NYC

It was meant to be because the round trip ticket to NYC was the lowest price ever and for a Valentine’s Day weekend, that’s nothing short of a miracle. I love special surprises like that and if we can keep from freezing, we are here making lifelong memories. 🙂

Fashion Week Visit love this vest
So many of you have asked about what I’m going to wear, but honestly, the arctic weather that has just arrived is dictating that for me. It’s some of the coldest weather that NYC has had in two decades and that just reminds me of why my blog name is both beauty AND bedlam. I bring the bedlam. This kind of cold calls for layers and layers, but I knew that I could at least start my weekend off right with this fun outfit.

I’ve slowly been adding in a few great statement type pieces and this amazing vest from Cents of Style is one of them. Warm enough for NYC, but chic enough to dress up my thrifted $2 White House Black Market shirt and boyfriend jeans from TJ Maxx, this look is fun!

Love these Payless boots - only $15

Let’s just take a minute though and look at those boots. I can’t even tell you how excited I was to find these at Payless Shoes (just this past Thursday, so they may still be online or in the store). Sit down for this one because they were on clearance for only $18 and then when I went to check out, there was another 20% taken off for red tag items, so FOURTEEN BUCKS! That’s it!!

Now I know many of you are thinking you could not wear those heels, but they are from their comfort line and I wore them ALL day through the airport and my feet didn’t ache at all! That’s my kind of fashion.

Christian Siriano for Payless Shoes Amazing line

I can’t wait until it warms up just a bit because I will be rocking these new heels from Christian Siriano’s line.

Aren’t they amazing?

This is the same vest from Cents of Style and thrifted shirt, I just swapped out the boyfriend jeans for black ones, changed the footwear and added Christian’s new handbag.

Payless Shoes built for comfort

Yes, these were made for comfort.

I couldn’t get away from our dog who kept wanting me to play ball. 🙂 I would kick it as hard as I could and have our 11 year old daughter snap the pictures as quick as possible.

Again, the same outfit, now with the perforated pumps (shown above as well.)

These Payless Shoes are perfect for every fashion situation

Faux Fur Vest Frugal Fashion

Knowing how cold it was going to get, I was looking for warm additions to layer and this $10 Fur Vest jumped out at me (Ross).

For church, I dressed it up with Christian Siriano heels from Payless paired with thrifted dress pants and a brown tee I’ve had forever, but I love the look even more with casual jeans and boots.

Plaid Coat from Platos Closet #frugal #fashion

I’ve been waiting patiently for a great trench coat. I am looking for one with a great pop of color, but when our daughter was shopping at Plato’s Closet, I found this Plaid Pea Coat for $20. I was thrilled.

Ready for Fashion Week Frugal Fashionista style
Ironically enough, I ended up using my daughter’s fab black Pea Coat, which she snagged on Black Friday for only $20 (Belk’s.)

Its all about the pop of color Frugal Fashionista #fashionweek

Here’s a sneak peek of what I wore to Christian’s show.

For me, I decided you can never go wrong with chic black. I wanted it to be all about the accessories and the pop of color in the shoes. These Christian Siriano Cobalt Blue Snake pumps made this outfit, along with some Cents of Style bling. (P.S You can snag these pumps for under $20 today.)

I can’t wait to share my interview with Christian and everything that I’ll experience at my first ever Fashion Week show in my next Frugal Fashionista post.

Waiting in Line Times Square discount tickets
Until then, a peak at my wonderful daughter being such a trouper as we waited in 12 degree weather to get discounted Broadway show tickets. I just had to chuckle when I saw this picture. I don’t think the guy meant to photobomb our shot, but it sure looks like he’s doing a model pose, doesn’t it? I guess that’s what NYC is all about. 🙂

Time Square at Night

And until next time, the picture that everyone must post when they head to Times Square at night. For my sweet country girl, she now has a whole new outlook on life. 🙂

So chime in, any specifics about Fashion Week you are wondering about? I’ll answer those questions in my next post.

  1. Oh Jen, you deserve a trip like that. You have been so inspirational with your fashion frugalista posts. Once again, since I started shopping at garage sales and thrift stores, I get way more compliments than I ever used to. I’ve taken it up a notch by learning about altering thrifted clothing from Jillian at http://refashionista.net/about/

I’ve learned soooo much from you and Jillian! Thanks for the inspiration! You are looking so chic!

Mary – you are so sweet and I’m glad I’ve been able to help. I share in the next post, but as much as I planned on going and buying some great new outfit to wear (which I would not have felt at all guilty about), I went into Gooodwill first and found that chic long top for $3.75. I was around all these “stars” with thousand dollar all black outfits and thought, “I’m rocking this thrifted gem just as well as they are.” hahah.

  2. All your outfits look a-mazing! You look adorable in everything. I really need to practice wearing heels more often. It’s not that they are uncomfortable. I’m just so uncoordinated that I can’t walk in them. Plus, having flat feet with no arches doesn’t help. I can do a 1-1 1/2 inch stacked or wedge heel, but not anything skinnier or taller like the beautiful shoes you are wearing.

Trust me, typically I am the same way. It really has to do with how the heel is made. Those boots with the higher heel are VERY easy to walk in where as others with the same size heel can cause me to topple over. 🙂

  4. Aren’t you a bible beliving christian? Promoting an openly and proudly gay fashion designer doesn’t exactly line up with that.

  6. Love those blue pumps! I’m going to check out that line at Payless. Pumps look so great with jeans but darn, they hurt! I could be persuaded if they are comfortable. 🙂

They are quite comfortable. I wore them for five hours and never had a problem, although they specifically have a comfort line that I love. I’ve worn those heels for ten hours and still been good to go.
